Performance improvements of real-time crowd simulations

2010

The current challenge for crowd simulations is the design and development of a scalable system that is capable of simulating the individual behavior of millions of complex agents populating large scale virtual worlds with a good frame rate. In order to overcome this challenge, this thesis proposes different improvements for crowd simulations. Concretely, we propose a distributed software architecture that can take advantage of the existing distributed and multi-core architectures. In turn, the use of these distributed architectures requires partitioning strategies and workload balancing techniques for distributed crowd simulations. Also, these architectures allow the use of GPUs not only fo…

Ant Colony Models for a Virtual Educational Environment Based on a Multi-Agent System

2008

We have designed a virtual learning environment where students interact through their computers and with the software agents in order to achieve a common educational goal. The Multi-Agent System (MAS) consisting of autonomous, cognitive and social agents communicating by messages is used to provide a group decision support system for the learning environment. Learning objects are distributed in a network and have different weights in function of their relevance to a specific educational goal. The relevance of a learning object can change in time; it is affected by students', agents' and teachers' evaluation. We have used an ant colony behavior model for the agents that play the role of a tu…

Global Understanding Environment

2009

Industry pushes a new type of Internet characterized as the Internet of Things, which represents a fusion of the physical and digital worlds. The technology of the Internet of Things opens new horizons for industrial automation, that is, automated monitoring, control, maintenance planning, and so forth, of industrial resources and processes. Internet of Things definitely needs explicit semantics, even more than the traditional Web—for automatic discovery and interoperability among heterogeneous devices and also to facilitate the behavioral coordination of the components of complex physical-digital systems. In this chapter, the authors describe their work towards the Global Understanding Env…

Modelling PM10 Crisis Peaks Using Multi-agent Based Simulation: Application to Annaba City, North-East Algeria

2015

The paper describes a MAS (multi-agent system) simulation approach for controlling PM10 (Particulate Matter) crisis peaks. A dispersion model is used with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict the PM10 concentration level. The dispersion and ANN models are integrated into a MAS system. PM10 source controllers are modelled as software agents. The MAS is composed of agents that cooperate with each other for reducing their emissions and control the air pollution peaks. Different control strategies are simulated and compared using data from Annaba (North-East Algeria). The simulator helps to compare and assess the efficiency of policies to control peaks in PM10.

Trust-enhanced intelligent security model

2012

In this paper we propose a trust-enhancement of access control to protect both integrity and confidentiality based on trustworthiness of users performing operations and documents' content analysis. We propose to utilize trustworthiness opinions from subjective logic and express levels of integrity as levels of trustworthiness. We assign confidentiality levels based on contents of documents and use opinions to express trustworthiness of such assignments.

Goal-Oriented Development of BDI Agents: The PRACTIONIST Approach

2006

The representation of goals and the ability to reason about them play an important role in goal-oriented requirements analysis and modelling techniques, especially in agent-oriented software engineering, as goals are more stable than other abstractions (e.g. user stories). In PRACTIONIST, a framework for developing agent systems according to the Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) model, goals play a central role. Thus, in this paper we describe the structure of the goal model in the PRACTIONIST framework and how agents use their goal model to reason about goals, desires, and intentions during their deliberation process and means-ends reasoning as well as while performing their activities.

RgbDF: Resource Goal and Behaviour Description Framework

2006

Agent-oriented approach has proven to be very efficient in engineering complex distributed software environments with dynamically changing conditions. The efficiency of underlying modelling framework for this domain is undoubtedly of a crucial importance. Currently, a model-driven architecture has been the most popular and developed for purposes of modelling different aspects of multi-agent systems, including behaviour of individual agents. UML is utilized as a basis for this modelling approach and variety of existing UML-based modelling tools after slight extension are reused. This paper proposes an ontology-driven approach to modelling agent behaviour as an emerging paradigm that originat…

Convergence of Web 2.0 and Semantic Web: A Semantic Tagging and Searching System for Creating and Searching Blogs

2007

The work presented in this paper aims to combine Latent Semantic Analysis methodology, common sense and traditional knowledge representation in order to improve the dialogue capabilities of a conversational agent. In our approach the agent brain is characterized by two areas: a "rational area", composed by a structured, rule-based knowledge base, and an "associative area", obtained through a data- driven semantic space. Concepts are mapped in this space and their mutual geometric distance is related to their conceptual similarity. The geometric distance between concepts implicitly defines a sub-symbolic relationship net, which can be seen as a new "sub- symbolic semantic layer" automaticall…

Verification of JADE Agents Using ATL Model Checking

2015

It is widely accepted that the key to successfully developing a system is to produce a thorough system specification and design. This task requires an appropriate formal method and a suitable tool to determine whether or not an implementation conforms to the specifications. In this paper we present an advanced technique to analyse, design and debug JADE software agents, using Alternating-time Temporal Logic (ATL) which is interpreted over concurrent game structures, considered as natural models for compositions of open systems. In development of the proposed solution, we will use our original ATL model checker. In contrast to previous approaches, our tool permits an interactive or programma…
